Fukahori, Tokio

Kaku Deta Nyusu (Internet), (137), p.1 - 10, 2024/02

At the request of the EC/Joint Research Center, the author attended on an EU-sponsored side event "Providing the best nuclear data for tomorrow's nuclear solutions: challenges and opportunities" held simultaneously at the IAEA 67th General Conference as a panelist. Presented were the prospects for nuclear data activities in Japan and discussed the sustainability and revitalization of nuclear data activities. In addition, based on the roundtable discussion at this side event, the Nuclear Data Section held a meeting consisting mainly of panelists to consider future responses. In this article, I would like to report on the side event and subsequent follow-up meetings and discuss the background of these meetings.

We investigated the distribution mechanism of Eu(III) in a single polymer-coated silica particle including nitrilotriacetamide (NTA) extractants known as HONTA and TOD2EHNTA. The present study provides a valuable approach for the evaluation and enhancement of the functionality of "single extractant-impregnated polymer-coated silica particle".

During shut down of the HTTR (High Temperature engineering Test Reactor) RS-14 cycle, an increasing trend of filter differential pressure for the helium gas circulator was observed. In order to investigate this phenomenon, the blower of the primary helium purification system was disassembled and inspected. As a result, it is clear that the silicon oil mist entered into the primary coolant due to the deterioration of the charcoal filter performance. The replacement and further investigation of the filter are planning to prevent the reoccurrence of the same phenomenon in the future.

The superconducting symmetry of the heavy fermion uranium-based superconductor UTe$$_2$$ is investigated using low temperature penetration depth measurements. The anisotropic low-energy quasiparticle excitations indicates multiple superconducting components in a chiral complex form. The most consistent is a chiral non-unitary state.

Lower superconducting critical fields $$H_{rm c1}$$ of UTe$$_2$$ have been determined. Orthorhombic UTe$$_2$$ has magnetic easy axis along the $$a$$-axis. We found $$H_{rm c1}$$ perpendicular to $$a$$ showed anomalous enhancement. By comparing with anisotropy of upper critical fields, effect of magnetic fluctuations on superconductivity is suggested.

Collection of strength characteristic data used for analysis evaluation in reactor pressure vessel and in-core structures in accident

In a light water reactor, which is a commercial nuclear power plant, a severe accident such as loss of cooling function in the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and exposure of fuel rods due to a drop in the water level in the reactor can occur when a trouble like loss of all AC power occurs. In the event of such a severe accident, the RPV may be damaged due to in-vessel conditions (temperature, molten materials, etc.) and leakage of radioactive materials from the reactor may occur. Verification and estimation of the process of RPV damage, molten fuel debris spillage and expansion, etc. during accident progression will provide important information for decommissioning work. Possible causes of RPV failure include failure due to loads and restraints applied to the RPV substructure (mechanical failure), failure due to the current eutectic state of low-melting metals and high-melting oxides with the RPV bottom members (failure due to inter-material reactions), and failure near the melting point of the structural members at the RPV bottom. Among the failure factors, mechanical failure is verified by numerical analysis (thermal hydraulics and structural analysis). When conducting such a numerical analysis, the heat transfer properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat, density) and material properties (thermal conductivity, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, tensile, creep) of the materials (zirconium, boron carbide, stainless steel, nickel-based alloy, low alloy steel, etc.) constituting the RPV and in-core structures to near the melting point are required to evaluate the creep failure of the RPV. In this document, we compiled data on the properties of base materials up to the melting point of each material constituting the RPV and in-core structures, based on published literature. In addition, because welds exist in the RPV and in-core structures, the data on welds are also included in this report, although they are limited.

Ferromagnetic crossover within the ferromagnetic order of U$$_{7}$$Te$$_{12}$$

We investigate the physical properties of a single crystal of uranium telluride U$$_{7}$$Te$$_{12}$$. We have confirmed that U$$_{7}$$Te$$_{12}$$ crystallizes in the hexagonal structure with three nonequivalent crystallographic uranium sites. The paramagnetic moments are estimated to be approximately 1 $$mu_{B}$$ per the uranium site, assuming a uniform moment on all the sites. A ferromagnetic phase transition occurs at $$T_{rm C}$$= 48 K, where the in-plane magnetization increases sharply, whereas the out of-plane component does not increase significantly. With decreasing temperature further below $$T_{rm C}$$ under field-cooling conditions, the out-of-plane component increases rapidly around T$$^{star}$$= 26 K. In contrast, the in-plane component hardly changes at T$$^{star}$$. Specific heat measurement indicates no $$lambda$$-type anomaly around T$$^{star}$$, so this is a cross-over suggesting a reorientation of the ordering moments or successive magnetic ordering on the part of the multiple uranium sites.
